Black Girls Rock Awards
Black Girls Rock-ed Lincoln Center as props were given to positive roll models.

Hosts Gabrielle Union and Regina King brought humor and celebration to Lincoln Center for the 2nd Annual Black Girls Rock Awards on Oct. 6th. Established by DJ and former Wilhelmia model Beverly Bond, the Black Girls Rock organization was created to promote the arts and establish dialogue about the image of women in hip-hop culture and mainstream media. For the past two years, the organization has been giving props to positive black female roll models across all professions and industries with the annual Black Girls Rock Awards. "Nobody was telling us, so we told ourselves," Beverly said. "We've learned to accept that we are unacceptable, and that's not acceptable."

Among those honored, VP of Universal Records Sylvia Rhone was given the Corporate Award for her efforts and strides opening doors for women to enter the recording industry. "This wasn't just a job, it's a passion," Sylvia said. In a male-dominated industry, Sylvia topped the ranks and became the first African-American and first woman chair a major label when she was appointed Chairman/CEO of Elektra Records in 1994.
