You're hanging with your roommate, talking about how you're both single when she gets an IM and asks for some privacy. As you leave the room, paranoia sets in -- is she talking about you? Guess again. Chances are, she might be having cyber sex. If you're thinking "ewwww," there's no need for the modest attitude. Welcome to sex in the 22nd century!
CampusKiss.com, a Toronto-based online dating community for students, conducted its first "Canadian CampusKiss & Tell Survey." Out of more than 2,500 university students who took the survey, over 80% of them were participating in some form of technology sex. Noah Gurza, founder of the website, says the results are surprising, but likely. "We did realize that new technologies are always embraced by younger individuals, but we didn't think it would've reached such a high number," he says. But are American students just as liberal in their virtual sexual behavior?
"Johnathon," a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says he's active in the Internet sex scene. "It actually gives you a window into a person's sexual preferences if you haven't been intimate with them yet," he says. "[Plus,] you don't have to worry about STDs or the morning-after weirdness."
Web sex allows students to be open while embracing one of the safest forms of sex. With webcams, chat rooms, and IM, you can explore your wildest fantasies without having to worry about condoms, location, or any of the technical difficulties besides your Internet connection. Basically, it's a quick fix to those lonely nights in your dorm room!
