Between Laci and Latoiya
Two women go missing -- one black, one white. Guess which story most news outlets will choose to cover.

If missing teenager Natalee Holloway walked into the room right now, would you recognize her? Chances are, most of you would. Pictures of the 18-year-old, with her long blond hair and easygoing smile, have appeared nightly on every major news network since her disappearance in Aruba this past May.

The extensive coverage given to the Natalee Holloway case is similar to that of Laci Peterson, Dru Sjodin, Chandra Levy and Jennifer Wilbanks (the so-called "runaway bride"). All of these women have become household names, while other missing women, such as Tyesha Bell and Shirley Geanes, have not. The difference? Natalee, Laci, Dru, Chandra, and Jennifer are all white, and Tyesha and Shirley are black. Because of this discrepancy, many people are left wondering why women of color who are in comparable situations, like Latoiya Figueroa, a pregnant black woman from Philadelphia whose case drew comparisons to that of Laci Peterson, don't receive a comparable amount of news coverage to their white counterparts.
